Different Shades of Silence
Different Shades of Silence is a project which set out to search for Shangri-La of modern society, haven on earth – silence. While the journey to Shangri-La is only a metaphor, as pure silence does not exist externally in urban space, the search for external silence lead to exploration of inner silence and our perception of what really is silence. Can silence be found in a green patch in between two busy roads? Can it be found hiding on top of a hill overseeing the city? Or is it a concept which one has to define for oneself?
The audio–visual installation consists of six photographs and six audio loops, which document the various states and shades of silence in six different urban sanctuaries of silence – parks and gardens. By using their mind, imagination and empathy viewers can recreate experiences of the author by looking at the same view and listening to the same sound as the author. For the best experience viewer is asked to devoid his or her mind from any thoughts and immerse in audio and photographs.
