Zalumballe Festival
––
Latvian Independent Music and Arts festival Zalumballe approached me in April, 2009 with an offer to make their identity and promotional campaign. Timing was perfect as I could merge this live-brief with an art-direction project at university.

During last three years Zalumballe festival has grown a lot and has become an independent culture festival. Activities haven't been limited to music alone, so this year there was yoga, improvisation theater and lots of other activities.
Another integral part of festival is integration with the environment. Since start it has been a festival where youth from urban environment reconnect to nature and co-exist with other live creatures.
In order to reflect this we based the design on the existing aesthetic of the festival site using model animals from the area, grass and bushes. The type was also hand-rendered using small planks to give it the recycled / natural feel.

On this project I worked together with Luke Wright, who helped a lot with building the set and pitched initial poster designs. Thanks goes out also to Lyall McCarthy, who could translate my sketch into nice lettering and hammer for the first version of website. I ended up learning a lot from this project: from making Flash banners at 5AM because of different time-zone to making websites based on semantic code writing and xhtml/css standards.
